Blackwood Park Residence

  • > Completion: 2009
  • > Location: Blackwood Park, SA

The plan form is approximately square, divided into four quadrants, given expression by projection of dividing walls past the building envelope. The dividing walls define two principle axes around which the plan is organised.

On this site, the north-south axis divides the building into living areas on the east and sleeping areas on the west. The east-west axis divides each of these zones in turn into subzones.

The east-west axis has width, acting as a linking corridor between living and sleeping areas. The corridor is roofed with a low pitch, acting as a collector roof to the main roof areas.

The roof geometry gives the building height at its perimeter to give presence towards the street despite the fall of the land.

The house may be split in level along either axis, accommodating sloping sites. The number of steps can be varied to suit different site gradients.

The building can address three aspects simultaneously in terms of solar orientation, views, gradient and or street address. Design of windows, doors and wall areas can easily be modified to suit the particulars of a wide variety of sites.
