In mid 2003, Swanbury Penglase was approached with a brief to refresh parts of one of Adelaide’s oldest and most iconic hotels, The Holdfast Hotel, or affectionately known as ‘The Holdy’.
The concept was to create a contemporary yet timeless appearance for the Hotel whilst maintaining the distinctive ‘Holdy’ experience. The emphasis throughout the design is on clean lines and simple, monotone colours, with textured features and splashes of colour that can be easily refreshed when they become outdated.
The general finish throughout the internal spaces of the hotel becomes a monochromatic play on texture. The use of bold colour is intentionally non apparent, allowing the various textures and finishes of selected materials ranging from volcanic rock to smooth two pack painted panels to create layered and distinctive spaces.
