The client’s aspiration was to transform a neglected Victorian style symmetrical cottage into a well presented residence that reflected the lifestyle of modern living. The house was constructed at the turn of this century and comprised five main rooms. The challenge was to provide further accommodation in a style sympathetic to the existing residence and yet still maintain a distinction between the original structure and the addition. A light filled galley style kitchen provides the link between the old and new, while modern fixtures and fittings allow a contemporary, low maintenance lifestyle.
A paved courtyard allows the kitchen and adjacent living spaces to take advantage of the northern aspect, providing luminous spaces all year round. The uncluttered flow of spaces and the abundance of windows gives a great sense of volume and helps obscure the distinction between interior and exterior boundaries.
